Crayola Beauty Eyeshadow, Face Crayons Review

It's finally happened. Crayola has released MAKEUP PRODUCTS. Earlier in June 2018, in collaboration with Asos, Crayola has released a coterie of eyeshadow palettes, crayons for the face, mascara, and highlighter in an array of colors to fulfill all your childhood dreams of coloring (literally) your face. Out of any brand that is going to come out with makeup, I thought that Crayola made the most sense. So I bought a couple of items to test out and see if it's worth the hype. If you're interested in Crayola Beauty items, you can buy them from the Asos site. I didn't buy every item available because I don't have money like that but I bought some of the things I was very interested in so let's get this show on the road.

Crayola Beauty Eyeshadow Palette Review

Alright, first things first, I bought the Crayola Beauty Mermaid Palette. The box claims that this palette contains 10 creamy matte and metallic eyeshadows. I have a couple of thoughts about this palette.First, there is not a matte shade to be found in this palette. This is composed of shimmers and glitters. Mattes are colors that don't have a shine to them and all the colors in this palette are definitely shiny. I'd like to know what Crayola's definition of "matte" is because that is just not what is in this palette. It's a little disingenuous to me especially since people might buy this expecting one thing and get something totally different. AND since this was marketed as having matte shades, I expected to be able to create a look with just this palette and seeing all shimmers and glitters, I was not able to. Some people can conjure up amazing eye looks just with shimmers and glitters but that's not the kind of look I like to go for so I was kinda at a loss on this palette.Speaking of making eye looks with this palette, I don't think I've ever had such a tough time working any one palette before. Just looking at the colors, none of them seem to complement each other at all. There doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason to the colors chosen other than they're "mermaid-ey." Are the smaller shades on the outside supposed to go with the four larger shades in the center? Upon actual use, they don't.Another criticism I have for this specific palette is lack of pigmentation. I give a little room for glitters because for glitter eyeshadow to show up as intended on the eye, you'd have to use your finger and press the color into your lid instead of buff it on with a brush so the glitter doesn't break up and wash out. However, even after much finger pressing and patience, the glitters and shimmers of this palette just refused to show up on my eye. Four, five, six dips into the pan later, I still cannot get the color to where I wanted it to be.A final point in terms of use is that these colors do not blend well together. I TRIED to make one makeup look just using this palette and it was just a mess. Trying to blend these colors together just made it a muddy shiny mess. I tried three times. I tried using three colors to make a look. That didn't work. I tried just using two colors to make a look. That didn't work. So in the end, I had to pull out a different eyeshadow palette and use the reliable mattes from that palette and basically just use one color from the Crayola palette and against those very pigmented colors from the other palette, Crayola colors just washed out and didn't even seem to be there. The last gripe I have about this palette is that they didn't name these colors which I found to be entirely baffling. We're talking about Crayola here. They're the company that makes it their business to generate colors and then name them all sorts of names. Why on earth don't have the colors in the eyeshadow have names? This doesn't matter if you're using the palette (if you can somehow make it work) but it just confuses me that this was a detail left out. BY CRAYOLA. The arguable OG of naming colors crazy things.

Crayola Color Crayon Trio Cloudy Day Face Crayon Review

Next to bat is the Crayola Face Crayon Trio. I got the Cloudy Day Trio with colors appropriately named (this time they're named) black, gray, and white. The face crayons are probably the best homage to the actual crayola crayon packs that we had as kids. I chose the Cloudy Day Trio because I wanted to see if these face crayons would work well as eyeliners. These face crayons are touted to have a very creamy texture and are suitable for eyes, lips, and cheeks. And indeed, these do have a very creamy, very smooth texture which was VERY nice. HOWEVER. As soon as I used the black crayon as eyeliner, it became a mess. This.transferred.like.crazy. It transferred like its entire job was to get everywhere it wasn't supposed to. As soon as I put it on and blinked, it got everywhere. Before I could even reach for mascara, it was a mess and I had to do damage control almost immediately. I used the white crayon on the lower waterline and it had a hard time showing up there. Not that showing up there mattered at all when the black color bled down to the lower parts of my eye with such ferocity that I all but removed the white to clean it up anyway.Clearly, I cannot use these for eyes as it suggested that I am allowed to do. Mind you, I was just sitting at home, in my climate controlled home. Imagine if I had actually gone outside wearing this as eyeliner. I live in Central Texas. It's humid here. Even the toughest, longest lasting makeup is put to the test here. If this face crayon gives up just by sitting inside, it stands no chance in the outside world. Lauren Conrad mascara crying is not a look that I rock.

Crayola Face Crayon Singles Review

I also bought a single face crayon in the shade Mauvelous (Why couldn't we get a cute name like this for the palette?) because I wanted to try a shade as a blush and lip product.Using the face crayons as blush and lip product works. Used as a blush, it does have the tendency to disappear from the skin so I basically had to use a LOT of product and blend very lightly to look like I have some blush on my face. Used as a lip product, I had to be equally careful because the product moves around a LOT on the lips. BUT you can make them work. It's a shame that it's so finicky and only works in very certain circumstances but the color mauvelous is pretty. The face crayons also are scented so if you're sensitive to smells, be wary of that. If you ever had those scented markers from Crayola before, it smells like grape marker which is cute.

Crayola Makeup Final Thoughts

I am not sure what the intent here is. It just seems the release was cobbled together and no quality control was done. Was it reviewed by anybody? Did anyone actually USE these products when they were in development? These were so disappointing because, honestly, if there ever was a brand that it would make sense to have a beauty brand with a very cute presentation, it would be Crayola. I also don't understand how, for a company as established and financially capable to make sure a venture like this works out, these products are so subpar. The packaging IS very cute and I was totally in my childhood feels but that is not enough to have a makeup brand. This makeup release completely relied on millennial nostalgia and it was just not worth the money. If you want to pick some up and try it for yourself, the range of Crayola products can be found in Asos. I hope that you have better luck with yours so you can go forth and conquer.
