Review: DHC Deep Cleansing Oil

I've tried a lot of cleansing oil/balms and for the most part, I've been disappointed by them. Western cleansing oils all basically go under the category of "trash" to me. I've really loved the Korean cleansing balms that I've tried but this time around, I thought I'd try a Japanese cleansing oil. On today's review, I'll be talking about the DHC Deep Cleansing Oil.

What Is the DHC Deep Cleansing Oil?

DHC is one of the older Asian cosmetic companies. It was established in 1972 and is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. The main ingredient of their products is olive oil which is, unsurprisingly, the main ingredient in their Deep Cleansing Oil. Besides cosmetics, DHC also manufactures health supplements and lingerie. They have some notable and unique products like the Face Wash Powder and the mascara that Emma Watson apparently swears by, the Perfect Pro Double Protection Mascara. However, the focus of this review is their Deep Cleansing Oil. The number of ingredients in this list is actually pretty short. Of course, olive oil is front and center. Olive oil is a staple in most kitchens but also has great skin benefits. Olive oil has great antioxidant properties which can help protect the skin from free radicals. If you have dry skin, good news, olive oil has great moisturizing properties as well. There are other ingredients on the list that provide skin benefits like tocopherol which is a vitamin and antioxidant and stearyl glycyrrhetinate which is used in cosmetics to soothe skin and CAN be found in animals as well.  Phenoxyethanol is an anti-infective agent and used as a preservative in cosmetics. It can also cause some eye irritation so beware of that. You can also find rosemary oil in this which is just extra skin conditioning. The DHC Deep Cleansing Oil retails for about $28 dollars on Amazon which puts it on the pricier end of cleansing oils.

DHC Deep Cleansing Oil Pros

This is a heavy duty cleansing oil. It very easily lifts off makeup from the skin with virtually no effort. I do have to work a little bit harder to get waterproof eyeliner and mascara off but even then, I don't have to use eye-gougy pressure to get my makeup off.It also leaves the skin soft and it's not stripping at all. When I managed to get it in my eyes, I did not experience any irritation myself even though it has phenoxyethanol which can cause eye irritation for some people. When I get them in my eyes, it usually leaves a really murky milky film which easily rinses out with water.I was also pleased to note that this oil does work up into a lather once emulsified with water. I was afraid it was just going to sit on the skin and refuse to budge. Olive oil is a heavy oil and you definitely feel that on the face. However, I didn't have to worry about this turning into a layer of grease on my face as it washes right off.

DHC Deep Cleansing Oil Cons

It's a personal preference but I tend to not like heavy feeling products on my face. From past experience, I just felt that heavier skincare items don't get absorbed into the skin as efficiently (or at all in some cases) and it just makes me feel gross. Even though the DHC Deep Cleansing Oil does feel heavy when you rub it into your face, once you wash it out, it's gone. The texture takes me out of it a little bit but I'm thankful that it doesn't leave a film on my face. This is a liquid cleansing oil and comes in a pump bottle and my gripe here is that it can get messy. Cleansing oils by nature are going to be messier than balms but here, again, is a personal preference thing. I like cleansing balms more because it's less of a mess. This cleansing oil is fine. However, it is liquid, and therefore messy.I also wince at the price tag on this. It's a really good cleanser, I will give it that, but twenty-eight bucks? There are oil cleansers out in the market that retail for less and will do just as good a job as this cleansing oil.

DHC Deep Cleansing Oil Final Review

In my opinion, if you've got about thirty bucks to spare and you don't mind a little heavier cleansing oil and a little mess, this is the cleansing oil for you. The list of ingredients in it is short and olive oil is good for your skin. It's a good cleansing oil and definitely of higher quality. If you've been looking for a cleansing oil, give this a try and go forth and conquer!
