Ingredient Spotlight: What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a clear, gooey substance naturally produced by the body. It's found in the skin, eyes, and connective tissues. Famous for its ability to retain moisture, hyaluronic acid is a popular ingredient in skincare products. Benefits include: keeping skin plump, smooth, and youthful-looking. In this post, we’ll spend time talking about the benefits and some risks associated with this awesome skincare ingredient!

Hyaluronic Acid Composition and Benefits

Hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring polysaccharide, is a prominent component of the extracellular matrix in bodily tissues. This biopolymer plays a crucial role in maintaining tissue hydration, lubrication, and resilience. Despite its name, hyaluronic acid is not an acid but a hydrophilic (water-loving) molecule capable of holding up to a thousand times its weight in water. Due to its biocompatibility and biodegradability, hyaluronic acid is widely used in skincare products, wound healing, osteoarthritis treatments, and as dermal fillers in cosmetic procedures. Its chemical structure contributes to its versatility and effectiveness in various applications within the medical and cosmetic industries.

Hyaluronic Acid Skin Benefits

Hyaluronic acid is a powerful humectant known for its exceptional ability to retain moisture. When applied topically, hyaluronic acid can provide a significant boost in skin hydration, leaving the skin looking plump, radiant, and youthful. Hyaluronic acid is also suitable for all skin types, including sensitive and acne-prone skin, as it is lightweight and non-comedogenic.

Hyaluronic acid can help the skin by:

  • Holds on to water molecules: Improve skin elasticity, making fine lines and wrinkles appear less noticeable

  • Soothing Properties: Calm inflammation and irritation, making it an excellent choice for those with sensitive or compromised skin barriers

  • Overall Skin Health: More hydrated, smoother, and healthier-looking complexion by strengthening the skin's moisture barrier

Hyaluronic Acid Skincare Risks

Hyaluronic acid is generally considered safe when used as a topical skincare ingredient, because it’s a naturally occurring substance in the body. However, there are some risks associated with its use on the skin that should be considered.

In rare cases, allergic reactions to hyaluronic acid can occur, leading to symptoms such as redness, itching, or swelling at the application site. Additionally, hyaluronic acid has the potential to draw moisture from the deeper layers of the skin if not used in conjunction with a good moisturizer, causing dryness and irritation.

Overuse of hyaluronic acid can also disrupt the skin's natural barrier function, making it more susceptible to environmental damage and infection. To mitigate these risks, be sure to read and follow directions on your skincare product, avoid excessive use, and remember to patch test new products containing hyaluronic acid. If you have an allergic reaction, stop use immediately, and consult a dermatologist.

Hyaluronic Acid Products

I’ve used many skincare products that contain hyaluronic acid. It’s a staple in my routine. If someone was just starting out using hyaluronic, however, I would recommend the Pyungkang Yul Essence Toner. Pyungkang Yul was developed with sensitive skin (specifically eczema prone skin) in mind so these are quite gentle on the skin. Currently, I’m working my way through the IT’S SKIN Hyaluronic Acid Moisture Emulsion. Emulsion is amazing for summertime because it’s not as heavy or cloying on the skin and hyaluronic acid is amazing at retaining moisture.

Hyaluronic acid's widespread use in skincare is supported by its ability to retain moisture, improve skin elasticity, and promote a plump, youthful complexion. This powerful ingredient has become a staple in my skincare routine. I love its lightweight texture and how it’s a versatile option for hydration without heaviness. As research on hyaluronic acid continues to evolve, we’ll likely know more about hyaluronic acid and the role it plays in our skin’s health.
